Make a night of it:

30/70 and Private Function

Heading into the Bowl for the final Happy Monday shows? You’re in for a treat. The line-up kicks off with the mellow, soul, jazz and hip hop beats of 30/70, before segueing into the hard and fast punk and garage sounds of Private Function. As they say, something for everyone.

If you want to make a whole afternoon and night of it, here are some suggestions on how to bookend this sonic feast.

Take your cue from the line-up and start off with some mellow cocktails on the rooftop of the quirky, superstylish QT Melbourne hotel. The hotel itself is an irreverent wonderland, and the rooftop bar is big and bright with broad city views.

Ramp up the speed a little with an afternoon snack at Melbourne’s famed and beloved Chin Chin. It’s casual, colourful and the South East Asian menu is all killer, no filler. (It’s also open late if you feel like a little something after the show.)

Since the two bands on the bill are quite different in their musical styles, why not get inspired and do a bit of good old Melbourne record shopping? Go up to the first floor of Mitchell House and get an expert recommendation at Rocksteady Records. Dip down a flight of narrow stairs in the Block Arcade and find yourself at Basement Discs. Or scurry down the stairs to Campbell Arcade at Flinders Street Station and pick up some vinyl at the beats-heavy Wax Museum Records.

If you’d rather get on the mike than the decks, why not book a room at Juke’s Karaoke? With wild ‘70s décor, drinks, accessories and a huge list of tunes, it’s the perfect way to get yourself revved up for the show.

After the Bowl gig, guitars still ringing in your ears, head to Beer DeLuxe for a quick bevvy (they close at 10pm), an American hot dog with Brooklyn lager onions, and a debrief on the gig. If you’re looking for more late-night options, make tracks to Mejico in Pink Alley for great Mexican snacks. Margaritas are $10 every Monday, so there’s that too. Or if you just want to take in the air of a perfect Melbourne night, Whitehart at the end of Whitehart Lane has DJs, drinks and an airy rooftop bar where you can relax until the needle runs off the groove.

Happy Mondays is a celebration of what Melbourne does best: live music. Every Monday night in February, two iconic music venues unite to curate a gig at the Bowl. The month-long series channels the spirit of a classic pub residency with some of the best local acts.
